Stage 1

"Through the dark Höllngraben to the sunny Hochkönig"

The hike begins at the train stop in Pfarrwerfen, where you will also find plenty of parking.
After crossing over the Salzach, the trail heads north for a short way, branching off to the left at the Reitsamerhof. Behind the inn, a steep supply lane leads up to the Schwabegg with its glorious views of the Tennengebirge.

There now follows a leisurely stretch for about 5 km through the Höllntal valley, past the former Gasthof Hölln, and without any kind of climb worthy of note. Just before Jagdhaus Hölln, the trail branches off to the left and ascends to the Grünmaissalm.

VARIANT: Just before the Grünmaißalm, we will branch off to the right and follow a trail which, after around 1 km, branches left and becomes steeper. This crosses a forestry road, leading past the Steinalm (now derelict) up to the Mitterfeldalm.

A few hundred meters before we reach the latter, we finally leave the forest and are afforded beautiful views to the Northeast and the Hochthron. The forest road ends at the Grünmaissalm and the hike continues along a trail located just a little higher up the hillside.

After about 1 km, we come to the forest road once again, heading west along this until our trail branches off to the right, quite steeply at first. The occasionally shady trail ends at the Stegalm. Even before we reach the Stegalm, the forest thins out increasingly, allowing us to enjoy the magical views.

After the Stegalm we have to ascend another 270 vertical metres before we reach the Mitterfeldalm. Staffed during the summer months, this is the first refreshment station on this route. From this point on, a sunny and very scenic trail continues steadily downhill to the Arthurhaus, a second possible refreshment break on this stage. Once here, hikers have the option of taking the bus back via Mühlbach and Bischofshofen to Pfarrwerfen.
