Salzburger Almenweg: Stage 31
"Along impressive cliffs to the Salzach"
From the Dr. Heinrich Hackel-Hütte, we must now descend to the Wengerau in order to make our way to the other side of the valley. We won’t find any high trails at the valley head, since the latter was formed by steep rock walls.
Once at the bottom, we take the supply road towards Wengerau (valley head). After 800 m we turn off to the Gamsblickalm. We now climb once more, tackling the 500 vertical meters up to the Elmaualm, noting that the pathway is very damp in some spots.
After another 800 m, shortly before the spring, a path heads off to the right and up to the Werfener Hütte. Since this is located beneath the rocky cliff face of the Hochthron, a sign by the spring reads that hikers might wish to take a canteen of water with them - nice to know that we’ll be rewarded by a glass of schnapps for making it to the top!
We now begin, however, the long descent to Pfarrwerfen. After the Alpengasthof Mahdegg, we leave the access road, taking the footpath down to the right. After crossing a small stream (don’t turn on the path prior to the stream!), we will continue making our way towards the valley along a narrow road until we get to the Samerhof. Right after this, the trail crosses a meadow and takes us to the forest’s edge, where a path now leads us to Lehen. At the fish ponds in Lehen, we turn off towards the Prandbauer, from where a path leads to the Wengergraben. We now make our way through the damp and narrow Wengergraben, hiking out of the valley to Pfarrwerfen.
