Stage 9

"Romance of low- and high-alpine huts"

Directions:

Coming from Dorfgastein via the Walchalm, a marked hiking path takes us to the Wetterkreuz and on to the Biberalm. Ascending from the valley, we don’t take a right to the Biberalm, instead after around 700 meters continuing straight ahead to the Wiedner Alm, fording the Almbach stream and crossing over to the Kerschner Alm.

The trail continues via the Hytongasteig down to the Fundner Heimalm (refreshments available). After taking a break here, we will cross the bridge over the Leidalmbach (lowest point of the hike: 1,373 m), coming to a forest path and ascending to a forestry road, which we will take to reach the Brandner Hochalm (refreshments also sold here).

From there, Almenweg No. 127A takes us above the tree line on a steep climb up to the saddle (2,019 m), before continuing on at far less of an incline – passing numerous small tarns – and reaching the Kleine Scharte (2,070 m), followed shortly afterwards by the finish of this stage, the summit station of the cable lift.
The Schlossalm lift (daily operations during the summer, from the end of May until mid-Oct.) leaves for the valley every hour.
