Typical foods such as cheese, butter, bacon and bread – all seasoned with that special “flavor” of the mountains – are absolute musts during any hiking expedition to the Gastein high country.
Your hut hosts transform a variety of natural, full-flavored ingredients into popular local specialties, including cheese noodles, meat pasties and Schottsuppe.
You also have a unique opportunity to stand right there as your hut host shows you how to conjure up local favorites, including beautiful, naturally pure cheese. Traudi, for example, at the Haitzingalm hut on the Schlossalm will let you peek over her shoulder as she makes butter and cheese. And you get to bake your own farmhouse-style bread in a charcoal-fired oven at the Amoseralm in Dorfgastein.
