Mountain Experiences: Gastein

The Salzburger Almenweg Regions

In June, when the snow on the mountains has melted away and the meadows in the valley have been grazed down, throughout the Alpine world farmers move with their animals up to the high pastures.

For centuries now, the farmers have been using this two-phase form of agriculture, making an important contribution to the preservation of the region’s unique landscapes and flora.

In Gastein alone, 40 different mountain huts at elevations between 1200 and 1830 meters are just waiting for you to visit.

Rustic wooden huts, delicious farm-fresh products and an unceremonious lifestyle, with everyone on a first-name basis. Visitors are greeted by a world unto itself. With an atmosphere and romance all its own.

Hiking across Gastein’s alpine pastures

At Gastein’s mountain huts, hikers can stop in for a well-earned break, sample a fantastic selection of homemade products and even purchase some to take home with them. Typical foods such as cheese, butter, bacon and bread – all seasoned with that special “flavor” of the mountains – are absolute musts during any hiking expedition to the Gastein high country.

Your hut hosts transform a variety of natural, full-flavored ingredients into popular local specialties, including cheese noodles, meat pasties and Schottsuppe.

You also have a unique opportunity to stand right there as your hut host shows you how to conjure up local favorites, including beautiful, naturally pure cheese. Traudi, for example, at the Haitzingalm hut on the Schlossalm will let you peek over her shoulder as she makes butter and cheese. And you get to bake your own farmhouse-style bread in a charcoal-fired oven at the Amoseralm in Dorfgastein.
