Moderately difficult climb to the Süd-Wiener Hütte, followed by the relatively flat Hirschwandsteig trail (crosses fields of scree on occasion)
Time on Trail:
ca. 5 Stunden
Leaving from the Vordergnadenalm, we walk southwards for about 2 km along a supply road next to marshlands fed by the Taurach, to the Hintergnadenalm. At this point, it’s time to tackle the 450 vertical meters up to the Süd-Wiener Hütte. This starts out partially on a forestry road, later solely along a footpath. From the Hödhütte it is only a short distance to the Süd-Wiener Hütte. Once at the saddle and the Obere Pleisslingalm, we will take the trail to the left, a flat route heading eastwards. Now we make our way on the Hirschwand trail at elevations ranging from 1750 to 1650 meters, above or below numerous fields of scree towards Obertauern (glorious panoramas out to the north). Once we’ve reached the same elevation as the Felseralm, the trail takes us over flatter terrain through larch forests. Before reaching the Neuhofalm, the footpath comes to a forestry road, which we will follow to the left as far as the bridge over the stream. After crossing the stream, we will hike upstream along the footpath, passing the Wisenegg-Tauernhaus and reaching the main road.
