Stage 24: Obertauern (Tauernhaus Wisenegg) – Oberhütte
"Man and Nature"
Starting Point: Obertauern (Tauernhaus Wisenegg)
Finish Point: Oberhütte
Lowest Point / Highest Point: 1665 m / 2100 m
Total Elevation Change (in meters): 700 m
Length of Stage: ca. 9 km
Stage Characteristics: We see the contrast between Obertauern’s highly developed ski area and a virtually pristine high-alpine world
Time on Trail: ca. 4 Stunden

Since this is a relatively long stage, it’s worth considering taking the Grünwaldkopf lift (runs in summer) for the initial ascent up to the Grünwaldsee - this will "save" us around 300 vertical meters! Otherwise, this hike begins right by the Wisenegg-Tauernhaus.
After a very short distance across meadows, we will come to a new road which subsequently serves as supply road through the ski area and up to the Grünwaldsee. The trail now climbs just a little more, before it once again crosses the ski area down towards the Seekarhaus. But the trail doesn’t go all the way down, instead branching off to the left after the Dikt`n Alm onto a meadow road, crossing a ski slope and taking us to the Knappenhaus. Only now do we once again make our way uphill to the summit station of the chair lift, from which point it is only a few steps to the Seekarscharte. Once here, we can enjoy the glorious views back over the Obertauern ski area. In order for us to reach the finish of this stage, we must now take the right-hand trail. If we went left, we would be able to descend directly to the Vögeialm. But we now hike in the direction of the Oberhütte, only climbing slightly and passing some very interesting karst formations on the way up to the saddle, the highest point (elev. 2100 meters) of this stage. We now continue below the Hundskogel, past some small mountain tarns and dropping down to the Oberhüttensattel.

Shortly before we reach the saddle, we take the branch off to the left towards the Oberhütte (where we recommend spending the night).
