This stage is an absolute highlight for anyone who loves bizarre limestone formations. After crossing the Hammerbach in Filzmoos, we take the road which leads up to Oberberg. Prior to Gasthof Reithof the trail branches off to the right. At the Weitenhaus farm we stop following the trail uphill, instead turning right onto a gravel path which leads towards Hammerbach. This will also take us to the Weitenhausalm café. Shortly thereafter a steep footpath to the left leads across larch meadows and up to the Nösslerriedel. Once at the saddle, we are rewarded with splendid views of the limestone peaks of the Dachstein Massif, including the Torstein, the Dachstein’s south face and the somewhat flatter Rötelstein. We leave the hunting lodge off to our right and continue on our way across meadows and through mountain pine down to the Bachlalm. From the Bachlalm we make our way down a gravel pathway towards the Schaidlalm (a hiking shuttle runs from the Bachlalm back to Filzmoos). After 300 meters we will follow the gravel path off to our left. Now we have to tackle a climb of 520 vertical meters to the Sulzenhals and then continue uphill to the right to the summit cross (elevation 1990 meters). Shortly before the summit cross, a steep footpath heads down the hill, turning into a high trail and leading over to the Hofpürglhütte at elevations ranging between 1750 and 1650 m. We will first cross the Rinderfeld, a grazing area covered in hunks of limestone and landslide residue. Then we will make our way across the talus of the Gosaustein. Shortly before the Hofpürglhütte, the trail once again crosses scree, which this time comes down from the Bischofsmütze. We can also make our way up to the Hofpürglhütte by taking the toll road up to the Unterhofalm, Aualm or by hiking up there via Neuberg. Also possible to make our way down via the Hofalm to the car park (stop for the hiking shuttle).
