Salzburger Almenweg - The hiking stages

Stage 16: Draugsteinalmen – Ellmaualm
"Around the Draugstein – alpine pathway through Ellmautal valley"
Starting Point: Draugsteinalmen
Finish Point: Ellmaualm
Lowest Point / Highest Point: 1710 m / 2062 m
Total Elevation Change (in meters): 650 m
Length of Stage: ca. 10 km
Stage Characteristics: Short, moderately difficult tour with a rather substantial climb to the Filzmoossattel at the outset
Time on Trail: ca. 4 Stunden

Leaving from the Draugsteinalmen - also reachable via the Karteisgraben - a trail takes us on a 110 vm climb up to the actual Almenweg itself. We now travel along the south-west flank of the Draugstein to the Filzmoossattel. If you wish, you can take a detour up to the 2356 m-high Draugstein, an imposing limestone crag with magnificent panoramic views (total time for the ascent and descent approx. 1 to 1.5 hrs.).
From the highest point of this stage, the Almenweg descends steadily for 350 vm down to the Filzmoosalm. From now on, we continue relatively parallel to the hillside across to the Ellmaualm. Prior to the Filzmoosalm, the footpath takes us to the Achtalm (not staffed) and the Loosbühelalm (recently remodelled). After the Loosbühelalm, we stick to the left-hand footpath out to the Weissalm (and not any further up the mountain). At the Weissalm, a hill farm still preserved true to its original style, we will find tools that were used on the hill farm in former times. It is now only about another ½-hour walk to the Ellmaualm. Spend the night here or hike down into the Ellmautal to Grund, a descent possible in around 1 hr. from any of the huts we have mentioned.
