Salzburger Almenweg - The hiking stages

Stage 3: Dientner Sattel – Schneebergkreuz
"As far as the eye can see"
Starting Point: Dientner Sattel car park, from the Birgkarhaus or the Mittereggalm
Finish Point: Schneebergkreuz / Karbachalm mountain lift
Lowest Point / Highest Point: 1350 m / 1938
Total Elevation Change (in meters): 650 m
Length of Stage: ca. 5 km
Stage Characteristics: Magnificent views of the Hochkönig, somewhat steeper ascent through occasionally marshy terrain to the Schneebergkreuz
Time on Trail: ca. 2.5 Stunden

The next stage begins at the Dientner Sattel (car park) or the Birgkarhaus/Mittereggalm. From the main highway, the Almenweg first descends about 40 vertical meters down to the Dientalm and follows the supply road leading to the left, through the forest up to the Tiergartenalm. Past the mountain inn with its big après-ski terrace, we will take the left turn and make our way through relatively flat terrain to the Klingelbergalm, where refreshments are available. After another 200 m, we pass a log hut (somewhat rundown) and the trail becomes more and more damp. Now comes a footpath branching off to the right. It passes through occasionally marshy terrain as it makes an occasionally steep climb up to a saddle, where the route now branches off to the left.
After approx. 700 meters, at a trail marker, we make a right and climb to the Schneebergkreuz. The panoramic views from this peak are the absolute highlight of this stage! VARIANTS: From the Schneebergkreuz we have three options - continue on the next stage to Goldegg/Weng, via the Karbachalm to Mühlbach, or via the Köckenalm to St. Veit (3.5 hours); after just 2.5 hours, we will be able to stretch out and relax in a peaceful oasis amidst a truly healthful climate.
